Creating Life Sized Monsters

From head to toe.

Can You Turn a Horror Mask or Character Bust Into a Full Wearable Costume?

So, you’ve got an amazing horror mask, monster head, or character bust. Maybe it’s a collectible you’ve had for years, a custom piece from an artist, or something you’ve been dreaming up yourself. There’s just one problem: you’ve got the head, but the rest of the character is missing.

This is exactly the kind of project I love.

David, for example was really a force to be reckoned with. The bust alone was about 6 pounds of fiberglass and silicone that could care less about needing shoulders let alone more body. The entire frame was constructed and counter balanced to support the weight of his iconic trenchcoat, leather pants and boots. Though the outfit belongs to rubber David, it’s actually accurate to the point of making an awesome convention cosplay…if you can pry it off of his cold, “dead” body.

Let’s Build the Rest of That Monster

A great mask or character head can be an incredible starting point for a full costume. The trick is figuring out how to build the rest of the character so everything looks like it belongs together. Depending on what you have, that might mean creating a body structure, fabricating the torso and limbs, matching the proportions, or developing clothing and creature details that complement the original piece.

And if you want to actually wear the finished creation, there’s a little more to consider. Weight, mobility, visibility, ventilation, and how the costume fits together all play a part in the design.

The approach depends on the piece itself and what you want to do with it. A wearable creature for conventions is a different animal (sometimes literally) from a life-sized figure intended for display.

I assess each project individually to figure out what’s feasible and how best to approach the construction.

Let me explain…

Each muscle and bone had to be strategically placed for his menacing stance to read.

What Do You Have in Mind?

Maybe you’re a horror collector with a fantastic monster bust that deserves more than a spot on a shelf. Maybe you’re a cosplayer who found the perfect character head but can’t find the rest of the costume. Or perhaps you’re a filmmaker, haunted attraction owner, or fellow artist with a very specific creature in mind.

I’d love to hear about it.

I’m interested in projects involving custom horror masks, monster heads, character busts, full-body creature costumes, and life-sized figures. If you’ve got an existing piece you’d like to develop into something more, let’s talk about what we can do with it.

You don’t need to arrive with a technical drawing or a complete construction plan. That’s part of the process. Bring me the idea, show me what you’re working with, and we’ll start there.

The devil in the details…

How Do We Get Started?

It’s pretty simple. Send me a few photos of your mask or bust, tell me what you’d like the finished character to look like, and let me know whether you’re imagining something wearable or a full-sized display figure.

Reference photos, sketches, and examples of similar characters are always helpful (even if they are AI). If you have a budget and timeline in mind, include those, too.

From there, I can take a look at the piece and discuss the possibilities, construction requirements, and estimated cost. Pricing depends on the size, complexity, materials, and amount of work involved, so I’ll need to see what we’re dealing with before quoting a project.

Not sure whether your particular mask or bust can be converted? Ask me anyway. We can start by figuring out what’s possible.

Have a Monster in Mind?

If you’ve been searching for a costume artist who can turn a horror mask or character bust into a full wearable costume, you’ve found your way to the right place.

I love the problem-solving side of creature work almost as much as the finished result. Taking an existing piece and figuring out how to build an entire character around it is a different challenge every time, and that’s part of the fun.

So, if you’ve got a monster head, a character bust, or an idea that’s been rattling around in your brain, I’d love to hear about it.

Get in touch with TaylorMade Costume Design to discuss your custom horror costume or creature build. Send me some pictures, tell me what you’re imagining, and let’s see where we can take it.

After all, you’ve already got the head. Let’s figure out the rest.
